Finnelma Engineering Oy, founded in 2000, is a Finnish engineering firm based in Helsinki.
The company's founder, Valde Määttä, has a profound passion for chemistry, which has significantly influenced Finnelma's vision. This passion was ignited during his early education when a chemistry teacher demonstrated the electrolysis of water, leading Valde to aspire to become a chemist. His interest further deepened upon learning about the DNA molecule in biology class, highlighting the intricate simplicity of life's building blocks.

Born in a remote Lapland village, Valde pursued chemical process technologies at the University of Oulu. Early in his career, he improved bitumen’s cold resistance, a project that eventually led him to head a Finnish-Soviet cooperation group and gain insights into trade dynamics with the Soviet Union.
However, the dissolution of the Soviet Union brought these operations to a halt. Embracing the opportunity to start from the beginning, Valde leveraged his extensive experience to choose a new sector aligned with his passion for chemistry, eventually venturing into the field of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), recognising both its innovative potential and a contribution to food security.

Embracing the opportunity to start from the beginning, Valde leveraged his extensive experience to choose a new sector aligned with his passion for chemistry, eventually venturing into the field of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), recognising both its innovative potential and a contribution to food security.
Seeking a technology partner, Finnelma identified HESY Aquaculture as a leading expert in RAS technology and has become its representative in the former Soviet Union region. This strategic partnership has successfully delivered several projects in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan, including both the first and second RAS fish farms in Russia, further strengthening Finnelma's collaboration with HESY.
Throughout its journey, Finnelma has embraced innovation, learned from challenges, and delivered successful projects, contributing to the advancement of RAS technology in Eurasian region. The company remains committed to promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and transferring technological know-how to support future food production needs.
